  Sara Beckman has spent her years as a boundary spanner at UC Berkeley, where she has held faculty appointments in both the Haas School of Business and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. She developed, institutionalized and directed the school’s Management of Technology Program and served as the Chief Learning Officer of the Jacobs Institute of Design Innovation within Berkeley’s College of Engineering. She now serves on the Jacobs Institute of Design Innovation’s Faculty Council and co-teaches a class on Collaborative Innovation with colleagues from the Theater/Dance Performance Studies and Art Practice departments

  Beckman’s research focuses on the pedagogy of teaching design and on the role of diversity on design and innovation teams for which she developed a Teaming with Diversity curriculum that is being used in classes in engineering, biological sciences, humanities, and business courses at UC Berkeley as well as at a local high school. She has published case studies on design for sustainability, design roadmapping, and leveraging design approaches in sales processes.

  Beckman directs the Product Management Program for the Berkeley Center for Executive Education, serving over 350 product managers from around the world each year and works with a wide variety of companies teaching and helping them implement design and innovation practices. In her time at UC Berkeley, she has received three Distinguished Teaching Awards at Haas, the campus-wide Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 2018, the Carol D. Soc Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring Award for Senior Faculty.

  Before joining UC Berkeley, Beckman worked in the Operations Management Services group at Booz, Allen & Hamilton and ran the Change Management Team at Hewlett-Packard. She received BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management and an MS in Statistics from Stanford University.

  Thomas Y. Lee

  Visiting Assistant Professor, Operations and Information Management, UC Berkeley Haas School of Business

  Thomas Lee teaches and conducts research on information and communication technologies to support innovation and new product development.

  Lee’s recent research has mined the text of online customer reviews to induce market structure and mined electronic medical records to redesign emergency department healthcare service processes. He was a data science fellow at frog Design and has taught with Cooper Design on the integration of data science and user experience design methods.

  He holds Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from MIT’s Engineering Systems Division and B.A. and B.S. degrees in Political Science and Symbolic Systems (Artificial Intelligence) from Stanford University.

  He has served as a visiting scientist at the Computer Security Division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, a research engineer at the MITRE Corporation, and as a contractor for DynCorp-Meridian supporting the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency doing research on Internet privacy and security.

  He currently teaches the core undergraduate course on decision modeling and an MBA elective on Design and Development of Web-based Products and Services at UC Berkeley’s Haas School. As Director of Data Science for the Fisher Center for Business Analytics in UC Berkeley’s Institute for Business Innovation, he is an architect of the Haas School’s Business Analytics curriculum. Before Berkeley, he was Assistant Professor of Operations, Information and Decisions at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a recipient of an Excellence in Teaching Award and the David W. Hauck Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the highest award for undergraduate teaching at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

  Jennifer Chatman is the Paul J. Cortese Distinguished Professor of Management and a faculty member in the Management of Organizations (MORS) Group at Berkeley Haas. In her research, teaching, and consulting work, she focuses on how organizations can leverage culture for strategic success and how diverse teams can optimize performance.

  Chatman’s award-winning research has shown, for example, how emphasizing innovation in the context of a strong culture increases firms’ financial success, how narcissistic leaders create organizational cultures lower in collaboration and integrity, and how norms to cooperate can cause members to blur differences among them, even if those differences are useful for group performance—suggesting that collaboration should be calibrated in diverse teams.

  Chatman is the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Haas School of Business, the Co-Director of the Berkeley Culture Center, and Editor-in-Chief for the journal Research in Organizational Behavior. She also runs the Leading Strategy Execution Through Culture executive education program. She has served in many other leadership roles at Haas and UC Berkeley over the years. Chatman earned her PhD at Berkeley Haas, and her BA in Psychology from UC Berkeley.
